Representing the church, Ohio law firm Gibbs & Associates called on the governor in a letter dated Friday - and posted on the church's Facebook page - to "immediately confirm that churches in the State of Massachusetts are essential and can open while exercising social distancing and enhanced sanitation." The letter asks for guidance as soon as possible "as our client needs to make important decisions for the Church's Mother's Day worship services this Sunday, May 10."
The letter cited a recent memorandum from U.S. Attorney General William Barr warning against overbearing infringement of constitutional and statutory protections enjoyed by religious institutions and religious believers during the fight against COVID-19.
